BIO-IDENTICAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY
• What is Hormone Therapy?
Hormone therapy is the replacement of hormones that are lacking at sufficient levels or may be unbalanced within an individual for adequate homeostasis. Replacement of these hormones may come in various ways such as transdermal, oral, or injectable. Studies have shown that transdermal is the safest route as it deters adverse side effects that may be experienced with HT. A physician who has specialized training in functional medicine, will do a very comprehensive blood or saliva test to examine your overall wellness. Then an individualized treatment plan will be formulated that is specific to your hormone and wellness needs.
• What is the difference between Synthetic and Bioidentical Hormones?
Bioidentical hormones are molecularly identical to the indigenous hormones our body produces. Our body then readily absorbs them without any kind of conversion process. Synthetic hormones do not have the same molecular structure as the body’s natural hormones, so the body must convert them to a usable form.
• What are the risks of hormone therapy?
As with all medications there are always risks although benefits may out way the risks with hormone therapy. Women have the potential risk which could include breast/uterine cancer, stroke and blood clots. These risks increase with women who are over the age of 60 and those who may have a family history of these conditions. In men, TRT may increase the occurrence of prostate issue such as BPH or prostate cancer. Every woman and man is unique and must weigh their discomfort against the fear of treatment. Risk is defined as the possibility or chance of harm; that does not indicate the harm will occur.
• What are the benefits of Hormone Therapy?
The benefits of hormone therapy can be countless as hormones are incorporated in almost every aspect of the body’s functionality. Hormones prevent the aging process along with disease development and progression. In women hormones help with such conditions as hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal symptoms along with so much more. In men it will help with lean muscle mass, libido, sleep and other conditions associated with aging.
